Do I need a separate phone line for broadband?

Not at all. The only criteria is that you have a BT-style phone line and that your local telephone exchange will accept the broadband connection. The broadband connection will use the same phone line, splitting the signal so that you can have both a normal telephone connection and broadband.

 

How do I know if my local exchange will allow me to get  broadband?

Visit here to go through British Telecom to see if it can be accepted. Don’t worry if you order broadband and later on find out that your exchange can’t accept you - BT won’t charge you.

 

What do download limits mean?

Simply put, this is the maximum amount you can download in a given month. To give you an idea of what this means, the average music track is around 2 meg - 1 gig is 1000 meg, so you’d be able to download around 500 music tracks for this. If you are intending to download a whole number of different items—be it through email or over the web - we would recommend looking at around 15 gig limit a month. There are a few offers which have no limit on the amount you can download, such as UK Online

 

What do the various speeds mean?

Assuming that you are viewing this site on a 56k modem, you could view this site 10 times faster if you were on as little as a 512k broadband system.

 

· 512k Broadband = 10 x faster than a 56k dial up modem - download a 2 MB music track in around 12 seconds

· 1 MB Broadband = 20 x faster - download a 2 MB music track in around 6 seconds

· 2 MB Broadband = 40 x faster- download a 2 MB music track in around 4 seconds

· 8 MB Broadband = 160 x faster - download a 2 MB music track in around 1 second
